Learning and Building !

Ariel Korchuk

On Friday morning, 13 June 2008, 45 cars climbed up to the look-out point in the Haruvit Forest. The cars stopped just before they reached the top and unloaded some 120 people; all the 6th grade graduates for the Ben Gurion primary school in Gan Yavneh, their parents, teachers and the school’s principal, who all arrived for the project “Leaving a mark”.

Each year the graduating sixth graders do something to leave a mark in their school, in their community, or neighborhood. This project this year was chosen together with the KKL, to build a path for hikers and bikers that will connect with the other paths in the Haruvit Forest. In many years’ time, when these children have grown and return with their own children, they can tell them proudly how they built the path.

After a short explanation, each class of children was given some tools and guided to the area where they would build their section of the path. We had no idea at what pace they would build the path, nor how long the kids would work, but what happened was way beyond our expectations. Instead of getting tired, their enthusiasm just grew and grew with every meter that they built. They worked on the section that we had planned for 3 hours, by which time they had produced one of the best made paths that I know of.

Everyone had great fun and the school principal declared that she hopes that this will be the beginning of a long-term relationship between the school and the KKL which will involve the whole school.

The Bikes For All team says a huge thanks to Ariel Korchuk and Yiftach Sahar and also to Adi Nahali of KKL for this initiative and wishes that many more kids will have the chance to build such a bike path in nature.
